Alerts and Warning Systems

Alert Los Angeles

  • Wind Advisories & High Wind Warnings: Alert LA County is an opt-in mass notification program utilized by the County of Los Angeles that allows individuals to receive emergency alerts by text, email and/or phone call.

  • Wireless Emergency Alert messages go directly to your cellphone, and are used to send out urgent alert and warning messages targeting certain geographic areas.

  • The Emergency Alert System broadcasts emergency information directly to radio and television carriers.

  • In partnership with the National Weather Service, Weather Radio Alerts are used to expand alerts in hazard areas, especially in areas with poor cellphone coverage.

FEMA (IPAWS) Alerts

The Integrated Public Alert & Warning System (IPAWS) is FEMA's national system for local alerting that provides authenticated emergency and life-saving information to the public through mobile phones using Wireless Emergency Alerts, to radio and television via the Emergency Alert System, and on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Weather Radio.

NOAA Weather Radio Alerts

  • When an evacuation alert or severe weather warning is issued by local officials or the National Weather Service, NOAA Weather Radios are able to alert you warning tone or siren.

  • NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards (NWR) is a nationwide network broadcasting continuous weather information directly from the nearest National Weather Service office.

  • NWR broadcasts official Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

  • Local agencies may issue evacuation notices through this radio-based system, providing a backup notification system to homes without power or out of cellular communication.

There are many emergency mass notification communication tools available to residents and businesses in Los Angeles County.
